BBQ or not? Speak your mind

topic posted Wed, December 1, 2004 - 5:44 PM by  Robbyn
After some discussion at last SAC meeting, it appears not everyone is thrilled about throwing a barbecue given the weather. The bbq was an idea originally proposed by Gary, but it is unclear how many students actually want it to happen this term. Since students will be the ones doing the work and enjoying its rewards, give us your opinion. What do you think? Should SAC . . .

1. have the barbecue
2. postpone it until the weather is nicer
3. do something smaller indoors (e.g in the student center/cafe)
4. plan a student event off campus, not sponsored by the school (e.g. get-together at restaurant, bar, club, movie, etc)
5. not do anything until next year
6. ???

    Hi Robbyn,

I don't know if it's been discussed (or if people would even be interested in it!) but I wanted to suggest the idea of having a Winter Formal. Not in a geeky girly kind of way, but I think it would be a fun chance to get all spiffed up -- something that we don't typically get a chance to do while we're slaving at school. Plus I think it might be something that teachers/staff might want to attend as well. (And a good justification for school sponsored alcohol, of course!) We could have students DJ the event so it wouldn't be a hokey time.

Shoot me down if you will, but it's just a thought! I know I'd go! ;)

      Jill,

That's an interesting thought, though if there's not time to plan a BBQ, then surely there's no time to plan this (between now and the break).

I'm almost positive that anything involving alcohol and sponsored by the school (for students) is never going to happen.

Lastly, the part that I find the most discouraging, is that I can't see anyway this could be planned that wouldn't have an obscenely unbalanced gender ratio.

All that said, Yeah I'd probably go.

Well I agree about the gender balance, but I guess in my optimism I would hope that people would bring a guest (to kind of show our friends/SO's our school and our classmates AND to promote the school at the same time. But then again, I realize that would probably introduce a cost issue. As for time frame, I was thinking more January or February than before break so there would be time for appropriate planning. And as for alcohol -- well, it was worth a shot!

I appreciate your feedback! And like I said, I was throwing it out there as just a thought for one of many, many options. :)

The idea of a dance or any other party can be discussed at the next meeting (thurs, 3:30). And like Jill says, it does not need to happen before the break. I know Josh inquired about more social events and Tyler mentioned an Ex'pression DJ night at a local venue. Perhaps there is a way to incorporate these things (or not). But let's nix the barbecue for now. Seems too iffy to plan something that may be cancelled due to the weather.

I agree. We should go for after the break on the dance party and something smaller indoors instead of the BBQ.

Just today (12/15), two students came to me interested in organizing some sort of dance. They did not mention whether they would like it to be formal or not, but both seemed ready and willing to support the idea. I told them that someone needed to actually take action and begin the first steps. Not sure if they will do that, but if anyone out there wants to get this going and have a specific meeting about this, just let me know. I'll also start a new post about this in case people want to discuss . . .
